Wallonia is the Belgian region where electric city buses started last and where the plan is now the steepest. TEC, the public operator (legally the Opérateur de Transport de Wallonie, OTW, branded LETEC since 2025), had 14 battery-electric buses in service at the end of 2025 out of 1,945 own vehicles: all 14 are Mercedes-Benz eCitaro G on one line in Liège. Under its revised public service contract TEC must have at least 350 fully electric buses on the road by 2029, has ordered 170 standard buses plus 18 double-articulated Solaris for delivery to 2029, and is electrifying 17 depots by 2030. The whole fleet must be zero-emission by 2045, ten years later than Brussels. This page is shorter than the Flanders page; what is here comes from TEC’s press room, the Walloon Government and the regional press, with the gaps listed at the end.
The fleet today
| Year | Own vehicles | Battery-electric | Diesel-hybrid | At private subcontractors | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 1,945 | 0 | 825 | 776 | TEC, 11 Jun 2025 |
| 2025 | 1,945 | 14 | 829 | not published | LETEC, 10 Jun 2026 |
The 829 hybrids are diesel buses with an electric assist (Volvo 7900 S-Charge, Solaris Urbino 12 hybrid, Mercedes-Benz Citaro G hybrid, Iveco Crossway LE Hybrid) and are not counted as electric anywhere on this site. About 101 of them in Namur and Charleroi are plug-in hybrids that can run part of their day without the engine (Walloon Parliament, 8 May 2023). Interurban routes are not electrifying yet: in July 2025 TEC ordered 127 diesel Iveco Crossway Low Entry buses for Liège and Namur, delivered from 2026 and 2027 (busplaner, 21 Jul 2025). TEC says hybrids will stay for years because today’s electric range does not suit long Walloon routes (RTBF, 28 Aug 2024).
Electric bus orders and models

The eCitaro G in Liège. The first fully electric TEC bus arrived at the Robermont depot on 22 May 2025, all 14 were there by August, and the BUSWAY B2 line (Guillemins station – Sart-Tilman – CHU – Botanique, about 8,000 passengers a day in term time) opened on 15 September 2025. TEC gives up to 120 passengers and 200–250 km of range per charge (TEC, 21 May 2025; LETEC, 15 Sep 2025; award: qu4tre.be, 2 Aug 2023).
The 24-metre Solaris. The order for 18 double-articulated Urbino 24 electric, with a framework for up to 45, was the largest double-articulated order Solaris had won (Sustainable Bus, 14 Nov 2024). LETEC gives 150 passengers with 52 seats, an 800 kWh battery, 480 kW and four motors on two electric axles; the first two arrived on 4 December 2025 and the first joined the fleet on 2 June 2026 (LETEC, 2 Jun 2026; L’Avenir, 4 Dec 2025). The full rollout on B2, planned for 2 November 2026, was postponed on 26 October 2026 after repeated technical faults, with no new date (RTBF, 26 Oct 2026; La DH, 26 Oct 2026). Later the tribus go to line B3 (28 for B2 and B3 together) and 14 more to B1. The buses and the new Tilleur depot are paid in part by the EU recovery fund, project I-3.20, EUR 105 million (NextGen Belgium, consulted 28 Oct 2026). The Urbino 24 has no sheet on this site yet; the 12-metre version is on the Solaris Urbino 12 electric sheet.
The 170 standard buses. LETEC lists 170 standard electric buses, 3 articulated and 18 tribus for delivery between 2026 and 2029 (LETEC, 5 Jun 2026). No award notice and no maker press release for the 170 was found. The first private subcontractor with an electric bus is Voyages Léonard in Liège, with one Heuliez GX 437 ELEC since May 2025 (La DH, 16 Jun 2025). All electric city buses on the market, with their sources, are on the bus sheets; the chargers on the charger sheets.
Depots and charging
TEC charges mainly by cable in the depot overnight and uses pantographs only where a line needs them; that choice was made in June 2023 together with the choice for battery-electric buses for all future purchases. Seventeen depots are to be ready for electric buses by 2030: ten existing sites rebuilt and seven new ones (LETEC, 5 Jun 2026). The calendar below was given by the Walloon Mobility Minister in August 2026, “subject to grid capacity at each site” (L’Avenir, 1 Aug 2026).
| Depot | Region | Electric from | What is known |
|---|---|---|---|
| Robermont (Liège) | Liège-Verviers | 2025 (done) | 16 charging points, two electrical cabins, grid connection five times larger; home of the 14 eCitaro G (LETEC, 15 Sep 2025) |
| Mobi’Park Tilleur (Saint-Nicolas, Liège) | Liège-Verviers | 2 November 2026 | New depot replacing Jemeppe: 38 charging points, five high-voltage cabins, 18 MVA grid connection, solar roof of about 570 MWh a year, about 500 staff, EUR 105 million with EU recovery money (LETEC, 19 Aug 2026) |
| Jumet (Charleroi) | Charleroi | 2026 | Parking extended 2023–2025 (49 articulated spaces, solar canopies, charging equipment); “30 electric buses expected in 2026”, delivery not confirmed (TEC Charleroi, 5 Sep 2025) |
| Baulers (Nivelles), Jodoigne | Brabant wallon | 2026 | Announced for end 2026; Keolis opened its own first electrified Walloon depot at Nivelles on 17 March 2026, prepared for about 12 electric buses (Keolis Belgium, 17 Mar 2026) |
| Mons | Hainaut | End 2026; first buses 2027 | Civil works, high-voltage cabin and chargers since early 2026, EUR 4.5 million; the first electric buses of Hainaut, number not fixed (La DH, 19 Jun 2026) |
| Anderlues | Charleroi | 2026 | In the minister’s list; no detail published |
| Mécalys (Andenne) | Namur-Luxembourg | March 2027 | New EUR 35 million depot replacing Seilles, 37 bus spaces, built for a fully electric fleet, first stone May 2025 (L’Avenir, 1 Apr 2026) |
| Charleroi Métropole, Houdeng | Charleroi, Hainaut | 2027 (Houdeng March 2027) | In the minister’s list |
| La Louvière | Hainaut | August 2028 | In the minister’s list |
| Frameries, Tournai, Ans | Hainaut, Liège | 2028–2030 | New, fully electric depots |
The minister’s list also names a 2027 depot printed as “Bauce”, which we could not identify. The Region pays an annual subsidy of EUR 22.9 million for the transition (L’Avenir, 1 Aug 2026). For the charging hardware TEC has a framework contract from July 2023 for up to 50 pantograph sets, up to 500 depot chargers and mobile chargers, running up to eight years, with no minimum quantity (TED, 17 Jul 2023). Which maker supplies the chargers is not published.
The plan: 2029, 2030, 2045
| When | What | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 2021–2025 | 45 % of bus purchases “clean” (EU Clean Vehicles Directive); TEC bought battery-electric for that share | European Commission, consulted 28 Oct 2026 |
| 2026–2030 | 65 % of purchases clean, at least half of them zero-emission | same |
| 2029 | At least 350 fully electric buses in service, written into the revised public service contract (signed 10 June 2026, extended to 2029) | LETEC, 10 Jun 2026; L’Avenir, 1 Aug 2026 |
| 2030 | “More than 350” electric buses, 17 depots ready, CO2 down 55 % | LETEC, 5 Jun 2026 |
| 2045 | 100 % zero-emission fleet in regular service | same |
The sums do not yet add up: 14 in service plus 18 tribus, 3 articulated and 170 standard buses ordered make about 205 by 2029, against a target of at least 350. No source explains the gap, so a further tender is likely. Earlier figures (400 electric buses by 2030 in October 2023, “about 340” in the 2024–2025 strategy, 500 vehicles announced for 2025 delivery in December 2023) were not met and should not be read as current plans (RTBF, 24 Oct 2023). TEC has no 2035 deadline like STIB in Brussels, and Wallonia has no low-emission zone: the Walloon Parliament repealed the LEZ articles of its 2019 decree in April 2024 (Touring, consulted 28 Oct 2026). The EU rule above all this, Regulation (EU) 2024/1610, requires 90 % of new city buses sold in the EU to be zero-emission from 2030 and 100 % from 2035 (European Commission, updated 30 Jan 2026). More on the rules and money page.
Hydrogen
No hydrogen bus has run in TEC service. The one Walloon project, “Waste-to-Wheels” in Charleroi (Engie, the waste company Tibi and Sotradia), would have made hydrogen at the Pont-de-Loup incinerator for 10 fuel-cell buses at the Jumet depot under the EU JIVE programme; the Walloon Government approved a EUR 2 million loan and a grant of up to EUR 2.7 million in May 2020 (La DH, 29 May 2020). It was postponed on 14 January 2021 for lack of funding and never revived in any source we found (RTBF, 14 Jan 2021). In 2023 the Walloon minister called battery-electric “more mature, efficient and lower-risk”, and in 2024 TEC said it plans no hydrogen or other technologies.
